PM Modi pledges support, India prepares to offer aid as earthquakes rock Myanmar, Thailand

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep concern following two significant earthquakes that struck Myanmar earlier today, registering magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4 respectively. In response to the seismic events, PM Modi reached out to both Myanmar and Thailand, assuring them of India's readiness to provide all possible assistance. He also offered prayers for the safety and well-being of the affected populations.  

Taking to X, PM Modi conveyed his sentiments, stating, "Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand." This statement highlights India's commitment to extending support in times of crisis to its neighboring nations.  

The earthquakes, which occurred at 12:50 pm local time, produced tremors that were felt across a wide region, including parts of India, China, Thailand, and Bangladesh. The epicenter of the seismic activity was located 16 kilometers northwest of Sagaing, a city in Myanmar, at a depth of 10 kilometers. The widespread impact of the quakes underscores their significant strength and the potential for widespread damage.  

Videos circulating on social media captured the alarming scenes as people fled buildings and shopping malls in panic, demonstrating the intensity of the tremors. These visuals serve as a stark reminder of the destructive power of earthquakes and the immediate fear they can instill in affected populations.  

The impact of the earthquakes extended as far as Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, located approximately 900 kilometers from the epicenter. In response to the tremors, Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha declared a state of emergency following an urgent meeting to assess the damage caused by the powerful quakes. This declaration reflects the severity of the situation and the Thai government's commitment to addressing the aftermath of the seismic events.  

India's prompt response and offer of assistance highlight the nation's role as a regional leader in disaster relief and humanitarian aid. By placing its authorities on standby and directing the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to maintain close communication with the governments of Myanmar and Thailand, India is demonstrating its commitment to providing timely and effective support to its neighbors during this challenging time.
